Not your "every day occurence"
Some things just don't last Forever! Whether it's Copper, PVC, Galvanized Pipe, or the notorious Quest; when it gives out Replace it!
There are certain applications where a spot repair will suffice. But there are other times when just "putting a Band-Aid" on it would not be sensible, or practicable.
Whether it's caused by 20 years of water running over a "kink" in the pipe, or a little pebble wearing a hole in it; It Happens! Two main solutions and ways of handling the problem is 1- Perform a "Spot Repair" by either jackhammering through the slab, or tunneling under it. And 2- Re-routing the line (usually overhead through the attic) thereby abandoning the compromised pipe and never having to worry about it happening again, "On That Line!"
Just as your "supply lines" bring the water (and gas) into your home... The drains take the water (waste) out. And those are often in need of repair and/or replacement as well. As the photos on this site show, this can be a confined problem, such as roots getting in through a crack in the pipe(s), or a "Whole House/System" issue where it calls for a complete re-pipe of the entire drain system. This is Very common with homes that still have the original cast iron drain pipes.
